A seaworker with Kiribati Fishing Services, Birike Bureka, 32, tragically died after an accident aboard the fishing vessel Dai I 8 Miya-Maru. The incident occurred at 1:03 PM Japan local time on September 30th.
Recruitment officer Ioota Taniera informed Radio Kiribati News that Birike accidentally fell overboard and drowned. Although other crew members were able to rescue him from the sea, he had ingested a significant amount of seawater, and despite multiple attempts at artificial respiration, they were unable to revive him.
Ioota stated that the fishing vessel immediately reported the accident to the Japan Coast Guard.
Preparations are currently underway to return Birike’s body to his family.
