The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development has officially unveiled its new name, now known as the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources during a celebration held yesterday at the Atinimarawa Compound in Betio.

In his remarks, Secretary Riibeta Abeta explained that the name change aligns with the ministry’s strategic plan, which aims to create a more comprehensive and sustainable future for Kiribati.

He emphasized that the shift from the term marine to ocean, broadens the ministry’s scope and reflects a more expansive vision.

Riibeta further clarified that removing the word “Development” from the ministry’s name signifies a shift in focus. He noted that the change does not imply the cessation of resource development but highlights Kiribati’s commitment to managing and sustaining ocean resources, while also considering the impacts of resource utilization.

The event was attended by the Minister for Fisheries, Ribwanataake Tiwau, MPs, along with CEOs, Board directors of the ministry’s State-Owned Enterprises, and staff members.
